the footsteps of the Tudors

Gateway to St Peter's Church

"St. Peter's Church"

as trying to do every Friday we begin our virtual tour, following in the footsteps of the Tudors, at a location outside the city of London. More specifically in Hever (Kent), very near the famous castle which was the residence of the Boleyn family.

Tomb of Thomas Boleyn

Specifically, we St. Peter's Church, a small church, dating from the twelfth century and whose importance is that within it we find the tomb of Thomas Boleyn, the father of which was the second wife of Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn. Along with Thomas Boleyn, we can find buried Margaret Cheyne, also relative to the Boleyn family.
Interior St. Peter's church

The church, as you can see, is very tiny, and inside, still see vestiges of its medieval past, but was restored in 1894. Knowing the personality of Thomas Boleyn greedy in life, surprised that his remains have been completed a so small, discreet and humble.

Foreign St Peter's church

What is more surprising, when you enter the small church, is the sense of peace. The church is surrounded by a small garden, with its cemetery, and as you can see in the picture, the surroundings are forest. Hever is a very small village, where it is difficult to find people on the road. Although as a curiosity, I will tell you that right off the church of St. Peter is a pub called "Henry VIII." Curious no?

What would Thomas Boleyn, if you lift your head? Would you like the place where he buried? Perhaps his ambition made him oppose such a place, as he probably expected a more upscale place, and a tomb more luxurious than it has. But since then, having been there, I think it is a bad place to rest forever, even for Thomas Boleyn.
